Mechanical Designer

PPI Systems is seeking a Mechanical Designer with a strong practical mechanical aptitude to join its collaborative, fast-paced R&D team. The project work spans the company’s wide range of equipment product lines in diverse markets from precision electronics manufacturing to large scale food production.

Working under a Senior mechanical designer and as part of a multi-disciplinary development group, projects range from structural weldments down to micron level precision motion and optical components, spanning from concept sketches through 3D models to detailed drawings for fabrication.

 

Key Areas of Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop mechanical assemblies and parts in Solidworks
  • Create detailed part and assembly drawings for fabrication
  • Create complete drawing and documentation packages for vendors and manufacturers
  • Review critical design aspects, dimensions, finishing, and drawing standards
  • Brainstorm ideas, design, analyze, test, document, and present your work by collaborating with a diverse group of colleagues and clients
  • Create customized designs of our standard products to meet specific applications
  • Build and test initial assemblies to evaluate functionality, robustness, and manufacturability of your designs
  • Develop and prepare concept plans and layouts from sketches
  • Lead smaller projects as well as work under the supervision of senior colleagues on larger projects
  • Manage and maintain the designs throughout the product life cycle through updates and revisions, and tracking revisions of parts and assemblies
  • Contribute to design optimizations for materials, thermal management, reliability, DFM, FMEA, performance and cost
  • Engage with manufacturing partners and suppliers
  • Create and maintain bills of materials and product database by entering data
  • Supporting integration of new components and systems in related documentation
  • Self-manage multiple projects with short-term and competing deadlines at any given time
  • Provide support to production, special projects, and new developments

Experience:

  • Degree or diploma in Mechanical or Mechatronics Engineering or Technology
  • Proficient with Solidworks for modeling, detailing and PDM
  • Minimum 2 years work experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Design for Manufacturing (DFM) expertise including machining and forming
  • Familiarity with ASME Y14.5-2009, ISO 16792:2006 and similar dimensioning standards
  • Strong familiarity with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
  • Knowledge and application of FMEA and DFMEA methods
  • Excellent written/verbal interpersonal communication skills
